AUBURN - Helen J. Michelich, age 90, a lifelong resident of Auburn, Illinois, passed away at Memorial Medical Center on Monday, October 29, 2012, after a brief illness.

Helen June Grider was born in Auburn on December 6, 1921, the only child of Melvin E. and Bessie Geddes Grider. She attended Auburn schools and graduated from Auburn High School in 1939. She married John E. Michelich of Auburn in 1946. John and Helen owned and operated several businesses in Auburn for over 40 years, and Helen was the bookkeeper. In 1946, they opened Michelich Sales and Service, first a Kaiser/Fraser dealership and then a DeSoto/Plymouth dealership. In 1961, they opened JEM Motors, a Ford dealership which they operated until 1978. In later years they operated a recreation vehicle dealership and The Yard Mini Storage in Auburn. Since her husband's death in 2001, Helen operated The Yard business on her own.

Helen was very active in her community and especially her church during her entire active life. She taught Sunday school and served as organist and choir director of the Auburn United Methodist Church for many years. She was a member and past president of several organizations including the United Methodist Women, Order of the Eastern Star and the Auburn Women's Club, and also served as President of the Sangamon County Federation of Women's Clubs. Helen was a founding member and first President of the Auburn High School Alumni Association, and helped organize the first All-Alumni Dinner many years ago.

She is survived by two sons, John A. (Barbara) of Fairfax, Virginia and Richard L. (Beth) of Auburn, and two grandchildren Russell J. Michelich and Cheri Kay Michelich, also of Auburn. Her husband of 55 years, John E. Michelich, preceded her in death in 2001.

Services will be held at the Auburn United Methodist Church at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 3, 2012. Visitation will be from 9:30 until the time of the service. Burial will be in Auburn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Auburn United Methodist Building Fund, the Auburn Ambulance or Auburn Emergency Squad.
