Daughter of James and Ann Avis, Early Pakeha settlers to Ngakutu Bay, Marlborough Sounds. When she was a teenager she married William Neal, son of Amelia and William Neal Snr in 1857. She had four children with William before his death in 1865 from Dropsy. They moved to Waitohi in it's very early days before it was called Picton. She married William's younger brother Ted some years later and raised five more children with her. William had asked his brother to care for Martha when he was gone on his death bed. Martha acted as midwife for a number of families through out Marlborough. They took up residence at Koromiko in a cottage directly across from the old petrol station. Martha died aged 73 years on the 3rd of July, 1912. She survived her first husband by 47 years and her second husband survived her by thirty years. Her inscription symbolises how devoted she was and how her character was. Her husband Ted has the inscription "Father" and is buried behind her plot.
