Son of Hewlett Lott & Maria Ditmar;
He was treasurer of the Vigilantes

From Montana Historical Society archives:

John S. Lott was born on 25 Nov. 1830 in Lottsville, Pa., son of Hewlett Lott. He attended public schools and a trade school to learn carpentry. In 1857 John and his brother, Mortimer Lott, journeyed to Marshall County, Kan., where they purchased a ranch. In 1863 John came to Nevada City, Montana Territory, with a wagon-load of merchandise to sell to the miners. Mortimer joined him, and the brothers purchased a store in Nevada City and operated it for a couple of years. The store had the only safe in the region, and many miners deposited large amounts of gold in the store safe. During their time in Nevada City, John was prominently involved in the vigilante movement. He composed the vigilantes' oath of allegiance and served as a juror during the trial of George Ives. During the territorial governorship of Sidney Edgerton, Lott was appointed auditor for two terms. In 1865 John and Mortimer Lott moved their store to the Twin Bridges area and raised vegetables to sell to the miners. At the time there was no town site. The brothers built a pair of bridges, one over the Beaverhead and the other over the Big Hole, giving the community its name. John S. Lott never married. He died on 24 May 1910 in Twin Bridges.
