Larry Don Earls was born on February 6, 1938, at Rutherford in Gibson County, Tennessee, to Comer Hall Earls (1913–1985) and Mary Elizabeth (Stevenson) Earls (1912–1979). Of Comer's and Elizabeth's four children, Larry Don Earls was the eldest of their two sons. Earl Don's brother, Stephen Hall Earls (1947–1992), is commemorated by a Find a Grave Memorial linked to that of 1st LT. Larry Don Earls and to those of their parents. Larry Don Earls and Stephen Hall Earls are survived by two sisters, Linda (Earls) Jenkins (Mrs. Percy Jenkins) and Diane (Earls) Todd (Mrs. James Todd).

After earning a college degree and a U. S. Army commission as a 2nd Lieutenant, Larry Don Earls served as a 1st Lieutenant in Company "A" of 2nd Battalion of the 502nd Regiment of U. S.Infantry within the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army from the fall of 1960 until January 2, 1967.

During the Vietnam War, 1st Lieutenant Larry Don Earls earned "the Silver Star "for "valor" and "gallantry" in combat as he was slain in battle while helping Company "A" to achieve its unit's objectives in Kontum Province of South Vietnam.

The U. S. Army returned the body of 1st Lieutenant Larry Don Earls to the United States and interred him with full military honors in Grave 6733 of Section Q of Stones River National Cemetery at Murfreesboro in Rutherford County, Tennessee.
