Sara White Gaines, 95, of Hickory, passed away in the early morning hours of Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018.

She was born in Hartwell, Ga., and relocated to Hickory with her family when she was two years of age. Sara was the third of four children of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bode M. and Bertha A. White.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Ewell White; and her two sisters, Virginia "Jenny" W. Harp and Francis W. Cooper. After 71 years of marriage, Sara lost her beloved husband, Mr. Forest M. Gaines, 6 1/2 years ago.

After meeting while attending Hickory High School, Sara White and Forest Gaines were married in November, 1940. With America's entry into World War II after Pearl Harbor, Forest enlisted in the Navy and was in combat from early 1942 through the end in 1945. During this time Sara carefully saved her husband's combat pay and delivered their first of three children.

This saved nest egg provided the initial working capital for Forest Gaines entry into the commercial trucking business. Gaines Motor Lines has headquartered its business enterprise in Hickory, for more than 70 years. Behind the scenes, Sara was active in the company as an officer and director.

Surviving Sara are her three children and their spouses, Dennis and Wink Gaines, Lisa and Raymond Brooks and Tim and Nancy Gaines. Sara's life revolved around her family. When her first grandchild was born she was affectionately known thereafter to all as "Mama Sara." She leaves six grandchildren, Fitz Gaines, Alex Gaines and spouse, Nicole Gaines, Dr. Sara "Mimi" Gaines and spouse, Decker Walker, Corey Gaines and spouse, Lauren Gaines, Carson Gaines, and Natalie Mitchell and spouse, Gavin Mitchell. Also surviving are the recent additions to the family, great-grandchildren, Liam Gaines, Norah Mitchell and Decker Walker. Sara was a student of politics.

She was always current on local, national and world events. She loved all forms of sporting events and was an avid sports fan. She supported many local charities. As children and education were of particular interest to her, Sara was a key benefactor in the startup of the Hickory Day School. As a longtime member of the Hickory First Baptist Church, she was a Sunday school teacher and Girls Auxiliary leader. Her faith in her Lord Jesus Christ was always at the forefront of her daily conduct and interaction with others. She was quick to share an interesting point she had recently read in her Bible or daily devotional. The family rejoices in her faith and is confident she is now with her Lord.

Services for Mrs. Gaines will be held at First Baptist Church in Hickory, Friday, Sept. 7. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall at 1 p.m., followed by a funeral service in the Church sanctuary at 2 p.m. A private graveside service will be held at Catawba Memorial Park. Dr. Don Gordon of First Baptist Church will officiate.
