November 21, 2005. Mr. Francis S. Martin Sr., 91, of 182 Highland Road, Massena, died Monday morning, November 21, 2005, at Massena Memorial Hospital, where he had been admitted the previous day from the Highland Nursing Home.
He was born April 1, 1914, in Syracuse, NY, the son of Stanley J. and Laura (LaRose) Martin. He graduated from grammar school in Syracuse; he then attended night school to obtain his GED.
He married Pierina M. Cardinale on April 26, 1937, in Syracuse. She predeceased him on July 3, 2000.
He worked as a time study engineer for Carrier Air Conditioning Company, beginning in the early 1940s until his retirement in 1972.
He was a former member of St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Syracuse, and St. Rose of Lima Church, North Syracuse. He was a member of the Bishop Curley Council Knights of Columbus, North Syracuse, where he served as Grand Knight for two years.
He and his wife, who was a Columbiette in the K of C, were very instrumental in raising funds for construction of the new K of C Council Hall on Taft Road in North Syracuse.
Following his retirement, he and his wife moved to Anaheim, California, to be closer to their children. In October 1990 he and his wife moved to Bullhead City, Arizona, where they lived until her death. He then relocated to Massena to live with his daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Bruce.
As a young man, Mr. Martin was an avid baseball player, especially as a catcher. He also enjoyed golfing, playing tennis and bowling.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Bruce Larabee, Massena; a daughter-in-law, Mary Martin, Los Gatos, California; nine grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Francis S. Martin Jr., on May 1, 1993, and a granddaughter, Lynnette Renee Larabee, on December 24, 1968.
Funeral services were held privately at the convenience of the family. Arrangements were with Donaldson Funeral Home, 100 North Main Street, Massena, NY 13662. Those wishing may contribute to the Canton-Potsdam Hospital Foundation, 50 Leroy Street, Potsdam, NY 13676.
