On August 30, 2018, Melvin Douglas Polk entered God’s kingdom while surrounded by family. Melvin was a proud WV coal miner. After working underground for 18 years, he shared his love of coal with others while working at the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mines until he retired in 2012. When outside of the mines he spent time with family, at church, in the woods hunting, or taking a four-wheeler ride.

Melvin Douglas Polk was born on May 2, 1951, to his loving parents, Rev. Lendo Columbus Polk (1929-2017) and Neva "Virginia" Price-Polk (1931-2020). In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Wayne Polk (1958-2016); paternal grandparents, Creed Polk (1906-1994) and Lavie Polk (Deceased); and maternal grandparents, Everette Price (Deceased) and Ertle Price (Deceased).

Many people will cherish the memories they made together including his three loving children, Eddie Polk & wife Crissy Polk, Doug Polk, and Pam Polk-Wallace & husband Thomas Polk; five wonderful grandchildren, Amber Polk, Andrew Polk, Katelyn Polk, Kristian Polk, and Catherine Wallace; his loving mother, Virginia Price-Polk; two sisters, Barbara Polk-Dickens & husband Ralph Dickens, Sharon Polk-Milam & husband Randy Milam; stepson, Michael Grey; stepdaughter, Jennifer Grey-Waits; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Melvin will be deeply missed by his loving church family at Mabscott Holiness Church. Those who will carry him to his final resting place, at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, will be Ralph Dickens, Randy Milam, Thomas Wallace III, Larry Woods, Robert Moore, and Richard Burgess. Those wishing to pay their respects and share their memories with Melvin’s family can do so on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 from 12:00 to 2:00 pm at Blue Ridge Funeral Home. Pastor E.G. “Buzz” Keller will conduct the funeral service and graveside committal services will follow and be conducted by Eddie Tucker. Melvin’s Family would like to send heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Bowers Hospice House for the wonderful care that they provided to Melvin and the compassion that they show to all the families that enter their doors.
