Maxine Owens Hughes, 66, died Sunday, September 2, 2018, at the Medical University of South Carolina Medical Center.
Mrs. Hughes was born in the Pleasant Hill Community of Georgetown County on April 5, 1952, a daughter of the late Lloyd Dillion Owens and Katherine Morgan Owens. She grew up in Pleasant Hill and attended Pleasant Hill Schools. Mrs. Hughes was the owner of B. B. Smith Grocery for about 15 years. She was a loving and caring Mother and “Nanny” to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are: two daughters, Kathy “Tina” H. Turner and Tiffany M. Davis, both of Georgetown; a brother, Elwood R. Owens (Sandy) of Hemingway; two sisters, Dorothy Turner (Ricky) of Andrews and Linda Hartley of Georgetown; grandchildren, Dillion Turner (Bailey), Paige Turner and Madison Turner, Haley Davis, Jason Davis, and Benjamin Lambert; and great-grandchildren, Brantley Turner and Hadden Lambert.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hughes was predeceased by a son, Jason Robert Hughes and a significant other B. B. Smith.
Funeral services will be Wednesday afternoon, September 5, 2018, at two o’clock in Six Mile Crossing Church of God. Officiating will be Pastor Jack Todd and the Rev. Ronny Poston. Burial will follow in Sampit United Methodist Cemetery under the direction of the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at Six Mile Crossing Church of God Tuesday evening, September 4, 2018, from six until eight o’clock.
