Mrs. Melissa (Pease) Chandler, widow of Clark Chandler, died in her home on East Main street yesterday morning at 7:10 o'clock. She had suffered from heart trouble for a number of years. She became ill from the grippe last Friday. Mrs. Chandler was born in Marlboro, Vt., on June 19, 1848, a daughter of Aaron and Louise (Mayard) Pease. She was married to Mr. Chandler in her parents' home in Marlboro on Sept. 20, 1870. They resided in the Chandler homestead in Wilmington until 1895 when they sold the farm and moved to the village where they bought the Dr. A. W. Rice house. One child was born to them, Mattie, wife of Leslie Hicks, who died on May 14, 1916. Mrs. Chandler was a devoted member of the Universalist church and an active worker in the Ladies' Aid society and church as long as her health permitted. She was a kind neighbor and generous to the needy. She was the last living charter member of Victory Grange. She is survived by a son-in-law, Leslie Hicks, of Marlboro, N. H., seven grandchildren, Ray Hicks of Keene, N. H., Mrs. Pauline Keogh and Earl Hicks of Mount Vernon, N. Y., Ralph Hicks of Seattle, Wash., Basil Hicks of Los Angeles, Calif., Clifford Hicks of Belchertown, Mass., and Mrs. Myrtle Jones of Pittsfield, Mass., five great-grandchildren, Katherine Hicks, Patricia Keogh, Robert and Edward Jones and Donald Hicks, one brother, Warren Pease of West Dover, Vt., and three sisters, Mrs. Cora Ware of Halifax, Vt., Mrs. Alta Ware of Marlboro, Vt., and Mrs. Belle Colt of Brattleboro, Vt. The funeral will be held in the home tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Dr. Flint M. Bissell, pastor of the Universalist church in Wilmington for many years and now of Dorchester, Mass., will officiate.
