In 1958, he moved with his young family to Pembroke, NC to open his medical practice. He was the first American Indian member of the medical staff at Southeastern Regional Medical Center, where the doctor's lounge is named in his honor. In 2006, he was awarded the "Order of the Long Leaf Pine" by Gov. Michael Easley. He was also a recipient of the Henry Berry Lowry Award, the highest honor bestowed on a member of the Lumbee Tribe.
