Duane “Wayne” Eugene Cordes, 70, of Shell Rock, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, September 1, 2018, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.

Duane was born October 8, 1947, in Aplington, Iowa, the son of Christopher and Marion (Miller) Cordes. Duane attended the Shell Rock School system, graduating in 1966 from Waverly-Shell Rock High School.

In his younger years after high school, he worked construction around the area. Later he started his own business, Duane Cordes Construction doing backhoe, excavating and dirt work.
Alongside his brother Dennis, the two farmed for close to 45 years on the home place after taking the farm over from their parents.

On September 10, 1982, Duane was united in marriage to Wanda Bergmann and they were later divorced.

Duane stayed active on the farm until his health wouldn’t allow him to continue.

Duane enjoyed the outdoors spending time camping, but most of all he was an avid fisherman. He always knew where the fish were biting. Duane was always up for a spur of the moment trip to go trout fishing or a late-night cat fishing on the river at the woods passing on his years of experience and techniques.
He enjoyed his road trips to look for farm machinery, fishing trips with the boat and tinkering in his shop on any number of projects he had going.

Most of all, Duane loved and cherished spending time with his family, especially his grandson, Wyatt, and his friends. He could start a conversation with just about anyone who was willing to listen and enjoyed telling stories of all the things he did in his younger years.

Duane is survived by his daughter, Sarah (Ben) Amfahr and their son, Wyatt of Tripoli; a son, David Cordes of Waverly; and his brother, Dennis Cordes of Clarksville.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant grandson Easton Amfahr.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 7, 2018, at Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock with Pastor Kim Smith officiating. Burial will be held in Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Shell Rock and also for one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
