John loved Longhorns football, BBQ, deer camp and boating on Lake Conroe or Lake Livingston with his kids. Entertaining family and friends around the table on Saturday afternoons brought him great joy. He was renowned for his humorous storytelling, his often-biting sense of humor and his ability to see comedy in everything – and to induce laughter in every room.
John was a lifelong animal lover, raising and nurturing everything from birds and livestock to countless rescue dogs and cats, all of which lived with tremendous love and devotion under his watch and care. He is survived by his wife Barbara Gay of Conroe; his son Edward Gay and daughter-in-law Sheila Gay of Conroe; daughter Nancy Gay Martinez and son-in-law Michael Martinez of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughter Mimi Gay of Burlingame, Calif; granddaughter Holly Armstrong and her husband Alasdair Armstrong of Singapore; grandson Matthew Gay of Conroe; great granddaughter Lily Grace Armstrong of Singapore; as well as his loving rescue dog, Joey. John leaves behind many beloved friends, partners and confidants he considered to be his brothers, sisters and family.
