In January of 1962, Teddy enlisted in the United States Navy where he would serve over 22 honorable and faithful years until retirement as a Chief Warrant Officer W3. Teddy’s time and accomplishments in the military were nothing short of extraordinary. From flight school to underwater dive school, and explosive ordnance disposal to the navy’s marine mammal program and earning his pilot’s wings; Teddy was stationed all over the world serving 3 tours in Vietnam. His dedicated service and expertise earned him over 30 special medals, insignia, and awards. Teddy was a true patriot in every sense of the word and was proud to have served his country.
Teddy was most proud of the birth of his three children, Kendra, Michael, and Tonya by their birth mother Lavada Helton Varnell. Many fond memories were made in raising his children and watching them grow.
Teddy is survived by his true companion of 11 years, Kaydell Ryker; his children, Kendra and Jerry Bostick, Michael L. Varnell and Carissa, and Tonya R. Varnell; his siblings, Janet Dickey, Debbie and Russell Thurman, Darrell and Sharon Varnell, and Fonda Edwards; 11 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; as well as numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gerald Lee Varnell, Billy Wayne Varnell; sister, Marlene D. Sietz; paternal grandparents, Jack and Naomi Varnell; maternal grandparents, Edward and Lucy Carter.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at Palmer Marler Funeral Home in Cushing, Oklahoma.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at Yale Assembly of God, 777 Glory Road in Yale, Oklahoma.
