Margaret B. Downing of Point Lookout died on August 25, 2018 surrounded by her family. She was born July 12, 1938, was Salutatorian at St. Angela Hall Academy in Brooklyn and received her B. A. from St Joseph’s College for Women in Brooklyn. She received a Masters Degree in Secondary English and Speech Education from Brooklyn College. She taught English at Long Beach High School, Southampton High School, and Hempstead High School. She spent most of her career at the Garden City Junior and Senior High Schools, where she was much loved by her students. Mrs. Downing moved from Garden City to Point Lookout in 1983 and was a member of the Point Lookout Civic Association in the 1980s. She was most proud of her three children—Marguerite Peck (Ernest) of Rockville Centre, John M. Downing, Jr. (Brenda) of Montclair, NJ, and Alison Metzler (William) of Garden City, and her eight grandchildren--Carolyn Peck, Elizabeth Peck, Michael Peck, Colleen Metzler, Jack Metzler, Kerri Metzler, Kara Metzler, and Maura Downing. Mrs. Downing was predeceased by her parents, Margaret (McCue) Jones and Arthur F. Jones of Brooklyn and her brother Arthur F. Jones, Jr (Sandra). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: St. Joseph's College.
