BURLINGTON, VT. - Dr. Joseph "Joe" Clayton Foley, of 32 Fairmount Street and the Converse Home in Burlington, passed away on Tuesday, August 30th 2018.

Dr. Foley was born on September 30th 1917 in Fair Haven, Vt., he was the son of Miles Patrick and Hannah (Burns) Foley.

He graduated from Fair Haven High School, Middlebury College, and obtained a Master's Degree from New York State College.

He worked for Pratt and Whitney in Hartford, Conn. as a Chemist prior to service in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Following service, he received his M.D. from the University of Vermont, did his internship at the Mary Fletcher Hospital, and his residency at UVM College of Medicine in Burlington, Vt.

He married Mary Lucille McCormick of Pittsford, Vt. on June 20th 1942 at the St. Alphonsus Church in Pittsford, Vermont. She was his wife and companion for fifty-five years, and predeceased him on July 6th 1997.

He was appointed to the faculty of the Medical College after his residency, which allowed him to practice Radiology, as well as teach and work on various projects related to his field. While his main interest was the practice of Radiology, he found teaching medical students, interns, and residents very rewarding and challenging, receiving the Teacher of the Year award from the 1966 senior class.

Dr. Foley was head of the Radiology Departments at the DeGoesbriand Hospital and the Fanny Allen Hospital, and was president of the Medical Staffs of the Medical Center Hospital, DeGoesbriand Hospital and the Fanny Allen Hospital as well as being on the board of directors for the Fanny Allen.

He was also active at the College of Medicine serving on several committees, including the Admissions Committee. He retired from active practice in 1985 as Professor of Radiology.

He was a member of several national radiology organizations including being a Fellow of the American College of Radiology, and a member of the Association of University Radiologists. He was also a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society.

Dr. Foley's outside interests included being a Director of the Burlington Savings Bank and the Bank of Vermont. He was one of the first lay members appointed to the Professional Conduct Board for Lawyers, and also a member and past president of the Ethan Allen Club. He was a member of the Burlington Country Club.

His hobbies included woodworking and collecting antiques, especially those made in Vermont.

He was predeceased by his parents, one sister; Frances Kelly, of Northampton, Mass., and two brothers; Burns Foley DMD of Northampton, Mass., and Raymond Foley, of Cromwell, Conn., and special friend; Anne Coffrin, of Burlington, Vt.

Interment will follow at the Resurrection Park Cemetery on 200 Hinesburg Road in South Burlington, Vt.
