Donald Bateman passed away Saturday, March 31, 2012, in Alamogordo. He was born Aug. 15, 1947, in Santa Rita to Arthur and Martha Bateman. He was the oldest twin by 10 minutes and was a whopping 2 pounds, 11 ounces.
When Donald was 9 the family moved to Silver City to a place that had an orchard, peaches, apples and cherries. Don and his brother Ron would wait in the orchard and what their mother did not take they would gather up and sell. Don played football from junior high to high school. At 14 he drove a delivery truck for a baker. He worked through high school and was offered a college football scholarship but turned it down and graduated in 1969 with a business and psychology degree.
He worked in cement construction in Indiana and Florida. It was in Florida that he met Susie Markiewicz from Milwaukee. He fed her a line, she took the bait and he followed her back to Wisconsin. They fell in love and married in 1971. In 1973, he moved the family back to Silver City and went to work at Phelps Dodge. He worked in various positions - labor gang, truck shop helper, lube and tire shop. In 1975, Don and Susie saw the reality of God in their lives. In the late 1970s he and John Mahl started a church, Word of Life Ministries. In the mid-1980s Don moved his family to Broken Arrow, Okla., to attend Rhema Bible College for a year. While schooling there he and Susie managed bagel shops. From there he moved to Alamogordo to work for Dennie Gose, a man he has known since he was 3 years old. Dennie mentored him on the job and he became project manager.
Don loved the Lord and it gave him great pleasure to share the Lord with anyone, even as he was going through his own trials. He persevered in giving God his glory, and through his action he gained admiration from others without seeking it. He will truly be missed not only by his family and co-workers but by all who knew him. He lived by Isaiah 41:10: So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Don so loved his family and not a day went by without him telling or showing them how much he loved them in his own unique way.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Don is survived by his wife, Susie; his children Michelle, Michael, Tabitha, Teresa and Mac Lueras, all of Alamogordo; his granddaughters Candice, Mariah and Kalea Bateman; his sister Gloria Martin (Grady); and his twin brother, Ronald Bateman (Allison), of Silver City. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, family and friends.
