Eugene E. Ellis, Scranton, died Thursday at the Linwood Nursing Center after an illness. He and his wife, Elizabeth Eckenrode Ellis, celebrated 66 years of marriage in September.

Born in Scranton, the son of the late Walter F. and Ethel Brown Ellis, he was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and a member of Immaculate Conception Church.

Gene was a family man who, while at times working three jobs, still managed to attend his children's appointments and activities. To his grandchildren, he was the best Pop-Pop and will be dearly missed.

A true, proud union man all his life, he was known for his strength and skill as a stagehand, working nationally and internationally on all sorts of Broadway and Off- Broadway shows as well as local productions at the Scranton Cultural Center and Montage. Later, Gene continued to serve the union and worked as a business agent with IATSE Labor Union Local 329 before retiring at the age of 85 with more than 55 years of service.

The family would like to express its deep appreciation to the administrators and staff of the Linwood Nursing Center for the wonderful and compassionate care provided to Gene during his short residency and also that of his wife, a current resident.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Kathleen Olmedo and Jeannine Radocesky, both of Scranton, and Jacqueline Ellis, Carlisle; a son, Eugene E. Ellis Jr. and his wife, Karen, Jefferson Twp.; a sister, Donna Reese, Factoryville; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; nephews and nieces.

He was also preceded in death by his grandson, Eugene Radocesky; a sister, Marjorie Martin; and a brother, Donald Ellis.

On Tuesday, the family will greet friends at the Donahue Funeral Home, 303 S. Main Ave., Scranton, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Catholic funeral services are private and will be celebrated by the Rev. Patrick McLaughlin, pastor of Immaculate Conception, with interment following in Cathedral Cemetery.
