Reverend Thomas E. Farmer, 89, of Midlothian, VA, went to be with his Lord and Savior August 29, 2018. He was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Marjorie Farmer; parents, Augustus and Nancy Farmer; two sisters, Geraldine Gardner and Virginia Sessler; and one brother, James Farmer. He is survived by his five children, Kathy Bates (Clifton LaRoy), David Wayne Farmer (Sandy), Timothy Farmer, Ruth Farmer (Chuck Hovermale) and Joy Cerisano; three grandchildren, David Wayne Farmer II, Rebeca Lynn Farmer and Justen Harris; great-grandchild, Cierra Powell; sister, Mary Calvert (Bud); and extended family and friends. Born in Camden, NJ, Reverend Farmer’s parents relocated to Richmond, VA where he spent most of his childhood. Upon graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1947, he attended Lancaster Theological Seminary in Lancaster, PA where he received his ministerial degree. Reverend Farmer went on to serve as the Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Midlothian, VA for 47 years. He loved his church as demonstrated through his commitment to his congregation, contributions to missions, his saving and baptizing of souls, and his dedicated perseverance toward a debt-free place of worship on 17 acres of land. He embraced the “sweet spirit of love and unity among the church family.” When Reverend Farmer wasn’t immersing himself in the church (which was seldom), he acquired other jobs to support his family such as auto body repair, mechanics and insurance sales. He was known widely for his great sense of humor and magic tricks, that he referred to as “object lessons”. He was known by his children for his love of the Bible, namely the Book of Proverbs 13:24 “spare the rod, spoil the child,” and his affection for Cracker Barrel Restaurant and all thrift stores. Reverend Farmer was a faithful and loving provider. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to James River Hospice for the care they provided, to his faithful and caring friend, Ed Bartholomew, and to the Calvary Baptist Church family for allowing Reverend Farmer lifetime residency in the church parsonage. Our heart felt thanks also for the care, meals and prayers given to our father. We wish to thank the Bliley Funeral Home for their professionalism and care of our dad. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, September 3, 2018 at Bliley’s-Chippenham, 6900 Hull Street Rd. A funeral ceremony will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 4 at Calvary Baptist Church, 10230 Hull Street Rd, Midlothian, VA 23112. Interment to follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his honor to Calvary Baptist Church.
