Valerie departed this earth on Friday, August 31, 2018 at Sheffield Bay Assisted Living. Valerie was born to Herman and Marion (Grandmaison) Meylan and was blessed to be raised on a family farm in Kawkawlin Township. Not only was she raised on a family farm but then wed her high school sweetheart, J.Wm. "Bill" Schmidt, and continued her life on the farm, joining Bill and his family farm and starting a family of their own. Valerie graduated from Handy High School in 1951. Valerie met Bill at Handy High School, followed by 65 years of marriage. Together they raised six children and enjoyed numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Valerie not only worked on the farm while raising her children, but also spent many years working outside of the home. Val worked at Delta Ford on Euclid Avenue followed by nearly 25 years at Essexville Hampton Schools as an office manager/accountant. Valerie was an active member of Kawkawlin Community Church serving on Deacons and Trustees boards as well as serving as chairperson for the annual Harvest Supper for many, many years. Valerie and Bill were always involved in youth trips, and family fellowship canoeing and camping trips with the church when their children were younger. The Elks Club was a huge part of Valerie and Bill's lives where Val always participated in the Doe's Club, serving her time as chairperson, too. Valerie's graduating class has continued to celebrate all of their reunions throughout the years and they still now celebrate a combined class reunion yet today! Into her retirement years Valerie was sure to find time to enjoy her get away home in Florida as well as her cottage in AuGres. These places offered many happy memories of time spent with dear friends and family. Taking her grandchildren to the cottage was her most notable memories of north as well as entertaining with extended family members. Memories of wonderful Christmas gatherings, Thanksgiving and Easter feasts, constant birthday celebrations, gardening and canning will forever be etched in our minds. Valerie always made sure that family connections stayed strong by visiting or hosting get-togethers.
