Obituary for Joyce Elaine Hamby
Joyce Elaine Hamby, 90, was called to her heavenly home to be with her beloved husband on their 71st wedding anniversary Thursday, August 30, 2018.
Born as Joyce Elaine Shay on April 8, 1928 on a farm in Gentry, Arkansas, she was the second of four children, born to Charles Wesley Shay and Florence Fern Porter Shay. She married the love of her life, Norman Eugene Hamby on August 30, 1947 in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. She attended North East State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma and taught school for a short time. She was a longtime member of Eighth Street Baptist Church in Grand Prairie. While there, she taught women's Sunday school classes, was captain of the bus ministry, became a member of the Women's Missionary Auxiliary and was active with the Young at Hearts. She also ran a mission for the shut-ins, taking them audio tapes of the most current Sunday service when they were unable to attend. She loved her grandchildren first and foremost, spending as much time with them as possible. She also enjoyed sewing and crafts, as well as gardening and traveling.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Charles Wesley Shay, Jr. and her husband, Norman Eugene Hamby.
Survivors include her sister, Lois Shay McJunkin; brother, Gerald Shay; daughter, Judith Kay and husband, Geary Stephen Miller; sons, Gary Eugene and wife, Rayne Moody Hamby; and Donald Ray and wife, Beth Weaver Hamby. Grandchildren, Justin Wade Miller and wife, Rita Thornton Miller; Brandon Erik Hamby and wife, Eryn Yan-Hamby; Aaron Kyle Hamby and wife, Paula Haden Hamby; Ashley Hamby Johnson and husband, Brett Allan Johnson. Great-Grandchildren, Foster Jing Yan-Hamby; Rem Song Kai Yan-Hamby; Kylee Lynn Hamby, Haden Kyle Hamby and Clara Elizabeth Hamby along with 2 nephews and 2 nieces.
