Charles Willard Church, 93, of Valdese, died at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Asheville on Tuesday August 28, 2018.
Willard was born on March 10, 1925 in Caldwell County to the late Mitch Church and Rosa Dell Triplett Church. He was a 1943 graduate of Valdese High School. Immediately following graduation, he reported for basic training in the U.S. Army, followed by participation in the three major campaigns of World War II. Soon after returning home he met and married the love of his life, Lillian Messer.
Willard was an active bowler, fast pitch softball player and fly fisherman. He was a life long member of the American Legion Post 234 of Valdese. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Valdese.
He is survived by nieces, Gwendolyn Eason of Jacksonville, FL; Lori Church of Las Vegas, NV; nephews, Walter Church, Jr. of Morganton and Jim Church of Hillsborough, NC.
He was preceded in death by his wife Lillian, his parents, brothers John and Walt, and sisters Fern and Ruth.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday September 1, 2018 in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese, with Rev. Jim King of First United Methodist Church of Valdese officiating; and Military Honors presented by the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard and the NC National Guard.
In lieu of flowers, Willard requested that memorial contributions be made to American Legion Charities, at www.legion.org; or the Mission Fund of First United Methodist Church, PO Box 637 Valdese, NC 28690.
