Barbara Ann Draper, 71, passed away in prayerful peace on Aug 26, 2018 surrounded by her family.  She was born Sept. 5, 1946 in Brooklyn New York to Ishmael John Tyra and Helen Marie Tyra.  The eldest of 4 girls, her sisters include Darlene McGee, Rebecca Babbitt, and Tracey Grider.  In 1948 the family moved to Jacinto City, Texas where Barbara attended school and graduated from Galena Park High School on May 30, 1964.  While attending school Barbara met and fell in love with Phillip Kennedy and 1 week after graduation they were married.  To this marriage 2 girls were born.  She later married Bill Draper and to this marriage 3 boys were born.

Barbara was a dedicated mother and worked tirelessly to provide for her children.  She often held two jobs to make sure her children had everything they needed.  In the early years she stood for hours on her feet as a hairdresser and waitress.  In 1980 she joined the Shell Oil Company workforce, working in Communications  for 24 years. After her retirement in 2004 she resided in Alvin, Texas where she lived close to her daughters until 2008 when she moved to Deer Park to be closer to her sisters.

Barbara is a cervical cancer survivor of 36 years. In 2005 she was diagnosed with breast cancer and was in remission for 11 years until 2016 when she was diagnosed with bone cancer. Barbara was known too many family and friends as a fighter, a wise woman, and a wonderful soul.  She was a dog lover, and rescued many of them.  She loved sewing and crafting with her sisters, daughters, and nieces. She had a green thumb especially for roses.  You could find her cutting up with her 4 sons, laughing at all their jokes, and she was often nicely telling them to stop slamming dominos on her dining room table.

Survivors include her daughters Kaleen Weatherly and husband Britt, Kimberly Weldon and husband Kim, Sons Ishmael Draper and wife Marysol, Zachary Draper and wife Michelle, Jace Draper and wife Keilah, Roy Hooten and wife Yesenia.

Barbara was also known as “Nanny” to her 20 grandchildren: Brittany, Hannah, Krae, Kailey, Kennedy, Isaac, Chloe, Nathan, Mason, Seth, Zoe, Jaxon, Gavin, Tony, Elijah, Moriah, Jace, Richie, Trey, Sofie; and her 4 great-grandchildren: Kyla, Hadlee, Emmett, and Amelia.

Barbara’s family wishes to thank the staff of Houston Hospice for their love and assistance in the care of their beloved Mother.  Those wishing to make donations in Barbara’s name can do so to houstonhospice.org

Visitation will be Thursday, August 30, 2018, from 6:00pm until 8:00pm, with a rosary being prayed at 6:00pm, at Niday Funeral Home – Beamer Chapel.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00am Friday, August 31, 2018, at St. Hyacinth Catholic Church in Deer Park. Barbara will be laid to rest at Grand View Memorial Park following the mass.
