John W. Smith was born in Davies County, Mo., September 8, 1831. Moved to Harrison County, Mo., in 1844, and in 1850, together with two of his brothers, Samuel and Nelson, and others from the county made the overland trip to California.

At the end of five months they reached the gold fields of the Rocky Mountains. After three years spent in mining and prospecting and two years ranching, he returned home in 1855. He was married to Adeline W. Claytor, December 1, 1864. To this union seven children were born namely: Mrs. John R. Daily, Samuel E., Sarah E. Burris, W. V. and C. D. Smith, J. T. and J. A. Smith.

His faithful wife, two sons, W. V. and C. D. Smith, and one daughter, Mrs. J. R. Daily survive him, the other four children preceding him in death.

He was converted and joined the M. E. Church South, in 1870, and remained a faithful member to the end. He was a loving husband, kind father and a good neighbor, the large crowd at his funeral being a token of the esteem in which he was held. Funeral services were held at Mt. Olivet after which he was buried in the beautiful cemetery at that place Thursday morning, September 2, 1915. Services were conducted by R. M. Wayman of near Albany.

NOTE: John Wright Smith was the son of Vincent T. Smith and Sarah Emmaline Wright.
