Jim was born in Rockford, Illinois on July 11, 1941 to the late Ernest and Esther Mae Carothers. He was the eighth of ten children born to his parents.
Jim proudly served his country in both the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy, retiring after 30 years of combined service. During his military career, he served during the Vietnam Conflict and the Bay of Pigs invasion, receiving a commendation from President Kennedy.
He was honored with several Navy awards for excellence at multiple Galley facilities. Jim retired a second time from the SC Department of Corrections after 20 years as a Food Service Supervisor. He was a long-time member and greeter at Remount Baptist Church. He enjoyed cooking for the members, serving as coordinator for meals and participating in the Angel Food Ministries and other charity programs to feed the community.
Jim is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ann F. Carothers, of Hanahan, SC, his two daughters, Constantina M. Soloff-Mead (David) of Wichita, KS, and Christina A. Sanders, of Hanahan, SC, his four grandchildren, McKenna D. Mead, of Bremerton, WA, Ryan M. Sanders (Loran), of Hanahan, SC, Matthew C. Sanders (Valerie), 0f Goose Creek, SC, and Madison A. Mead, of Wichita, KS, his two great-grandsons, Hunter Michael Sanders and Marly Cole Sanders, his special children, Diane Calloway Cuttray, Raymond Golden (Toni) and Nadine Robinson, five siblings, Margie Wolf, Frank Carothers (Sue), Sharon Martin, Harold Carothers, and Ada Noble (Jim), as well as a large number of special grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and four older siblings, Frances Otero, Roger Carothers, Carroll (Jerry) Carothers, and Shirley Willits. The visitation will be held Thursday, August 30, 2018 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Carolina Funeral Home, 7113 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, SC A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 31, 2018 at 11:00 am at the funeral home followed by burial with full Military Honors in the Valor section of Carolina Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Remount Baptist Church. Services entrusted to CAROLINA MEMORIAL PARK FUNERALS AND CREMATIONS, 843-797-2222.
