Melvin W. Fortenbaugh, 94, of Marysville, PA, passed away Sunday, August 26, 2018 in Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill. Melvin was born in Marysville, PA on February 24, 1924, the son of the late Walter J. and Laura (Knaub) Fortenbaugh.

Mel served in the U.S. Navy during WW II, serving in both the European and Pacific theaters. He served nearly 3 years on the USS Extricate which was a rescue and salvage ship and received several citations for life saving and rescuing ships. He came home safe, Thank God! Mel graduated from Marysville High School in 1941 then attended Central Penn Business College.

He was hired on the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1942 and retired in 1984 after 42 years of service. He was a member of the Marysville Church of God for 78 years, served on church counsel for 45 years, president of the church counsel for 4 terms also served as financial secretary for 20 years and superintendent of Sunday School for 25 years. Mel was an active outdoors man who loved hunting and trout fishing. He was a member of the Marysville Sportsmen Club for 45 years where he directed the kids fishing derby for 22 years. He stocked trout for the PA Fish Commission for 62 years, taught hunter safety class for 42 years and received awards from both Game & Fish Commission. Mel played baseball for 42 years and umpired for 14 years. He loved the Red Sox and Ted Williams. Mel made 102 trips to Gatlinburg, Tenn. in his lifetime. He loved dogs, especially Angel. He was the widower of Ethel M. (Martin) Fortenbaugh to whom he was married for 65 years and 3 months before she passed away 6 years ago. Great Wife!

Mel is survived by a son, Robert M. Fortenbaugh, his wife Karen, of Mechanicsburg, two daughters, Ruth A. Turner, of Marysville and Dottie M., wife of Danny Callies, of Calera, AL, four grandchildren, Ruth, wife of Chris Searchfield, Ryan Fortenbaugh, his wife, Dawn, Colleen, wife of Joe Hartz and R. Joseph Fortenbaugh. Also the great-grandchildren, Zachary, his wife, Rachel, Colton, Jarrett, Mallory Fortenbaugh, Jordan, Haley, Kyle Searchfield, Alyssa and Landon Hartz.. He was preceded in death by a sister, Elsie Mae Rice.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Thursday, August 30, 2018 in the Marysville Church of God, with Pastor Rodger Scheuing officiating. A viewing will be held from 10:30 A.M. to 12:00 Noon on Thursday in the church. Burial will be in Perry Heights Cemetery, Marysville. Arrangements are entrusted to the Michael J. Shalonis Funeral Home, Marysville.
