Russell Bates Roberts

Russell Bates Roberts passed away at home in Yuma, Az. on September 16, 2016. Russ was born the third of five children to Mark Carlyle and Gladys Irene (Bates) Roberts On December 13, 1931 in Walker Mine, Ca. The family moved to Caldwell in 1939. Russ grew up at 1614 Fillmore Street and graduated from CHS in 1950. On August 27th, 1950 he married Roberta Lamb and they started a family that included five children, Steven L., Teresa N., Charles J., Rendena K., and Russell Scott called Scott. Russ and Roberta eventually divorced. Russ always had an innate mechanical ability. From his early teen day, he always kept all his friends cars running. In 1957 he became the owner operator of Russ and Bob's Utoco Station at 108 W Avon St. In 1961 he decided he wanted to repair cars not pump gas and sold the station. He then opened Roberts Repair on Ustick Rd just west of Nampa-Caldwell Blvd. In 1974 he made his last career change and joined the IBEW electricians union as a master mechanic. He spent the rest of his career working all over the country. However, no matter where he was, he always made it back to Caldwell on Fathers' Day to play golf with his children. After retiring in 1996, Russ moved back to Caldwell and purchased a winter home in Yuma, Az. Eventually he chose to remain in Yuma year round. Russ was a life member of the Caldwell Elks Lodge 1448, being a member for 39 years. Russ, his brother Mark and his son Chuck were all recognized as Elk of the year for their service to the lodge. Chuck has served as Exalted Ruler twice. After moving to Yuma he also became a member of the Moose lodge where he spent many happy evenings. Russ' hobbies were hunting, fishing, and especially golf. He played many rounds with his brother Mark, his children, and friends. At age 84, he played his last round a week before he passed away. Family was extremely important to Russ. He had a very close and loving relationship with his siblings, children, and his many nieces and nephews. Russ was very giving and always willing to help other. He will be dearly missed by all who love him, He is survived by his sons Steve (Kathy), Chuck (Maryellen), Scott (Tammy) and his Daughter Rendena, 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, one great great grandson many nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his parents, sister Roberts, brother Dick, daughter Teresa, and granddaughter Tiffany.
