Betty was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother. Elizabeth Jane Schatteman was born April 23, 1930 to Romanie and Harry L. Schatteman in East Moline, Illinois. She married Carl Freeman, Jr. on May 29, 1948 at St. Mary's Church in East Moline. Carl and Betty recently celebrated 70 years of marriage.
Visitation is 4-7 PM Wednesday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, with a rosary recited at 3PM. A funeral mass will be at 10 AM Thursday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church,Silvis. Interment at St. Mary's Cemetery will follow the service. Memorials may be made to the Belgian Culture Center, Moline.
Betty graduated from UTHS and was a majorette baton twirler four years with the UT Marching Band under the direction of A. Burghult. She was a well known Belgian lace-maker and expert seamstress. She enjoyed teaching many others how to create her beautiful bobbin lace. There is a lace making chapter in Medellin, Columbia that bears her name. Early on in her marriage to Carl, she was a stay at home mom. Later was employed by Churuvia's Florist in East Moline, J C Penney, and The Economy Store in downtown Moline.
Those left to honor her memory are her husband Carl Freeman, Jr., daughter Peggy (Tim) Knudsen, Leesburg, FL, sons John (Kathy Grossell) Freeman, Rock Island, IL, Gary (Suze McGreevy) Freeman, East Moline, IL and Tom (Cindy Cardwell) Freeman, St. Peter, MN. Grandchildren, Matthew (Roxanne) Freeman, Laurie (Kevin) Holmes, Joshua (Christine) Freeman, Michael (Melody) Freeman, Andrew (Sarah) Freeman, Tiffany (Damon) Johnson, Molly (Donnie Bandy) Freeman, Steven (Christine) Freeman and Carl M. Freeman, 25 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, and a niece Christine Vincent, and her son, Scott (Kim) Schnaufer.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Louise Wilson.

The family would also like to recognize the Illini Restorative Care staff Jamie, Charissa, Kelly, Tiffany, Kristy, Stephanie, Jill, Jason,Tonya, Keisha, Faith, Preston, Jessica, Amivi, and Ashlea. The Hospice staff Casey, Lisa, and Brianna are also much appreciated for for their kindness and caring during Betty's passing.
