Born to Green Underwood (1799–1852) of South Carolina & Cecelia Amanda Bell Legg Underwood (1804–1892) of Virginia, who married on Aug. 30, 1836, in Winchester, Frederick County, VA. Sylvanus grew up at Black Thistle, the Underwood plantation in Alabama shown in the photo.

Sylvanus enlisted in the Civil War as a private in Company D, Alabama 8th Infantry Regiment, CSA. He also served in Holloway's Company, Alabama Cavalry.

Sylvanus married Jane Stobo James (1844-1897) on Nov. 23, 1863, in Dallas County, Alabama.

Two children:
Harris Falconer Underwood (1864-1929)
Emma Underwood (1865-1878; grave is lost)
