Peter J. Fontine, 72, West Scranton, died Friday in Geisinger Community Medical Center. His wife of 35 years is the former Mary Ellen Catalano.

Born in Scranton, the son of the late Fred and Caroline Ruotolo Fontine, Peter was a 1963 graduate of West Scranton High School and served as a sergeant in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church, West Scranton, and its Holy Name Society. Before retirement, he was employed at Tobyhanna Army Depot, and he and his wife had formerly owned and operated Checkers Pizza in Wyoming, Luzerne County.

Affectionately known as Uncle Pete, he was a loving and devoted husband, uncle and brother-in-law who enjoyed woodworking, tinkering and fixing things for family and friends and will be dearly missed.

Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Ann and Lisa Catalano; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Michael and Patti Catalano and Gerard and Cindy Catalano; and nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Paul Catalano.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, 1605 Oram St., West Scranton. Interment in Cathedral Cemetery.

Family and friends may call at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass.
