W.J. McNeely Paid Final Tribute
One of the community's best-known residents, Mr. William James McNeely, died at his home on Victoria street, Wednesday, October 19th, 1955, following a prolong illness. Mr. McNeely had not enjoyed good health for the past six years but was never confined to bed steadily until two weeks before he passed quietly away. Born in Beckwith township, August 7, 1864, he was a son of the late John McNeely and his wife, Matilda Drummond, and received his education in Carleton Place. Mr. McNeely resided in Beckwith township until 1889 when he moved to Ramsay township, where he farmed successfully for many years on the eighth line. On January 31st, 1894, he was married to the former Agnes Isabella Goth in Beckwith township, and to the union were born, one son, Mr. Arthur E. McNeely of Carleton Place, formerly of Ramsay township, and one daughter, (Ethel I.) Mrs. Percy Leach of Beckwith, both of whom survive. Mrs. McNeely predeceased him in 1916 Mr. McNeely remarried in 1930, his second wife being Mrs. Ernest (Pheobe) Houston Turner, who survives. During his long years of residence in the township of Ramsay deceased took an active part in its welfare and served as a school trustee and as secretary-treasurer of School Section No. 8 for many years. In 1953, Mr. McNeely moved to Carleton Place, where he remained. He was a devoted member of St James' Anglican church and attended regularly when his health permitted. In addition to his wife, son and daughter, he is also survived by one stepson, Mr. Alex Turner, Department of Agriculture, Ottawa, and one stepdaughter, Mrs. Harry (Hannah) McArton, Reg Nurse, and assistant supervisor of Rosamond Memorial Hospital, Almonte; also, three grandchildren, Mrs. Mac James (Lois McNeely), Ramsay; Miss Evelyn Leach, Beckwith, and Mr. Douglas McNeely, with the Department of Highways at White River, and one great grandson, Glenn James, Ramsay. Largely attended by friends and relatives the funeral took place from Fleming Bros Funeral Home, Lake avenue west, Friday afternoon to St James Anglican Church where service was conducted by Rev D.F. Weegar, Interment was made at Pine Grove cemetery. The pallbearers were Messrs. Charles McGregor, George Cox, George H. Doucett, Harry Young, John Cram and Harry Willis. Numerous beautiful floral tributes were received mute evidence of the high esteem to which Mr. McNeely was held. Out-of-town friends attending the funeral were from Portland, Smiths Falls, Ramsay, Franktown, Ottawa, and surrounding districts.
