Rufus Edwards Drake, Jr.

Newsoms - Rufus Edwards (R.E.) Drake, Jr., 93, went home to his Lord on January 23, 2018 surrounded by his family at his residence. He was the son of the late Rufus E. and Edna Hartman Drake of Newsoms and was also predeceased by son-in-law Lewis Edmonds, Jr., daughter-in-law Linda J. Drake, grandson Stephen J. Drake, and great-granddaughter Abbigail Drake.

R.E. was born and raised on the family farm outside of Newsoms where he spent his life working and supervising until recently. He served in the Merchant Marines in the Pacific during World War II (1944-1945). He was a member and trustee of Barnes United Methodist Church, a member of the American Legion and the Newsoms Ruritan Club, and served for many years on the Farm Bureau Board.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of nearly 71 years, Hilda Brett Drake, daughter Dorothy Rae Drake, and sons Rodger R. Drake, William E. Drake, and Joseph H. Drake (Linda T.). "Dadaddy" is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren: Gail Gagner (Chris) and children Heath, Kevin and Jordan; Cheryl Turner and children Colby and Shelby; Justin Drake (Casey) and son Carson; Lewis Edmonds III (Kristin) and children Jackson and Andrew; and Susie Edmonds (Bobby).

A graveside service will be held at Hollywood Cemetery in Newsoms on Friday, January 26, 2018, at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Mary Alice Colwell and the Rev. Kenneth Williams officiating . The family will receive visitors in the family home at 32561 Cypress Swamp Road.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Barnes United Methodist Church General Fund, c/o Cheryl Turner, Church Treasurer, 33080 Cypress Swamp Rd, Newsoms, VA 23874. www.wrightfuneralhome.org
