Phillip Nathaniel "Nat" Ryan was born to Nathaniel Hill Ryan and Sarah "Sally" Ann Wills on September 5, 1851 in Calloway County, Ky. Nat and Sally came to Kentucky from Virginia about 1844 or 1845. Nathaniel Ryan (Phillip Nathaniel's father) was Sheriff of Calloway County from 1856 to 1860. The Ryans built one of the first (log) houses in Calloway Co., on the Wiswell Road at Davis Hill, near Gibbs Store corner. The log house stood for many years. Davis Hill was very steep and rocky, but with the road paving it was eliminated. Nat Ryan had 3 brothers: William, John W., and Edmund N.H. "Ed". Nat had 3 sisters: Constance C.H., Louisa Ann, Mary Elizabeth (my great-great grandmother), Sally Ann, Nancy P. "Nannie", and Thankful N.H. Nat was married twice. First to Alice Ellen Martin, who died in 1880. To this union one son was born, Joe Ryan. His second wife, whom he married on April 11, 1883 was to Lula D. Coleman. They were the parents of two children, Mrs. C.C. Hughes, of Little Rock, Ark. and Nat Ryan, Jr. of Murray, Ky.

The picture listed here is all I have of Nat Ryan. I photographed it out of my family book. In this family book is a copy of an article on Nat Ryan taken from "The History of Calloway County-1931".

Excerpts from this article: "Nat owned and operated one of the largest stocked mercantile establishments in West Kentucky. A Christian gentleman, a successful business man, a loving husband and father, a man who has helped his fellowman and a man who has done as much for Calloway County as any other man living-this is Mr. Nat Ryan, Sr. of Murray, whom every one likes, loves, and admires."
