Fred was part of the Royal North West Mounted Police Cavalry Draft (CEF # 2683890) serving with the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force in France in World War 1. He served with the Fort Garry Horse regiment out of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and returned to civilian life after demobilization.

Fred is buried with his wife Nellie Myring (Southwick) Stevenson. The current grave marker was created shortly after Nellie passed away in 2009. The second photo shows the original headstone that Nellie had placed at the grave when Fred suddenly passed away in 1953, with names and dates inscribed at that time. Nellie, of course, had no idea that she would live such a long life; she died just 3 months short of her 107th birthday, 9-plus years into the 21st century! When the original headstone was replaced, the “Stevenson” from the original marble stone was placed at the foot of their graves.
