Mr. Townsend was born March 31, 1890, in Hartford, son of the late Charles C. and Sarah (Palmatier) Townsend. He was employed for many years at the D.O. Nichols Gas Station in Naugatuck. He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Naugatuck. He was a veteran of the US Army, WWI, Medical Corps.
He is survived by two sons, Theodore Townsend of Waterbury and Leith Townsend of Providence, RI; six daughters, Mrs. Isabel B. Tucker of Northfield; Mrs. Marguerite B. Barth of Pawtucket, RI; Mrs. Ruth Solberg of Naugatuck; Mrs. Gertrude Griswold of Oxford; Mrs. Mildred Kovic of Wolcott and Mrs. Elizabeth Baslak of Oxford; 24 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
Private funeral services will be held Saturday at the Alderson Funeral Home, 201 Meadow St., Naugatuck, with the Rev. John A. Balash, Jr., of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Waterbury, officiating. Burial will be in Grove Cemetery, Naugatuck. There are no calling hours and friends are asked to omit flowers but may contribute to St. Paul's Church Memorial Fund.
