James Albert “Pop” Coon, 80, of Pascagoula, Mississippi passed away on Thursday, August 23, 2018, surrounded by his family. He was born November 25, 1937, in Brookhaven, MS to the late Maurice and Madie Lee Coon.
Along with his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Debbie Jane, and mother-in-law, Inez Barfield, and father-in-law, Raybon Barfield.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nancy Barfield Coon; children, Melanie (Rick) Olsen, Jay (Barb) Coon, and Tracey (Gary) Evans; five grandchildren, Ryan, Malorie, Allison, James, and Hannah; two great-grandchildren, Hayley and Hayes; brother, Billy (Llewellyn) Coon; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Jim lived an adventurous life. He did everything from being the number one softball pitcher on the coast to building the world’s greatest ships at Ingalls for 43 years. He retired from Ingalls as General Ship Superintendent. He loved his work. After retiring, Jim tried his hand at the casinos and lived for getting up and driving over to see how many pennies he could win. Although he never told you how much money he lost, this was his passion and entertainment while driving his El Camino and as the grandchildren would say his “Palamino”. Jim was also a member of the American Legion and the Elks BPO. He always had a sense of humor up until his last breath.
The family would like to thank all of their friends, Hospice of Light, and many neighbors for all their love and support.
Visitation will be held Saturday, August 25, 2018, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow in the funeral home chapel beginning at 4 p.m. with Brother James Miller officiating. Interment will be on Monday, August 27, 2018 at Jackson County Memorial Park in Pascagoula, MS. Pallbearers will be James Coon, Ryan Olsen, Rick Olsen, Gary Evans, Randy Barfield, and Brian Barfield. Honorary pallbearers will be Sonny Fletcher, Terry Smith, Jimmy Haygood, Doug Horn, Ollie McVeay, Francis Frederic, and Poncho Tillman.
