Bertha May Harper
April 28, 1933 - August 22, 2018

Bertha May Harper was born on April 28, 1933, in Bridgeton, New Jersey. She was the eldest of three daughters born to the late Herbert Williams and Irene [Willet] Williams Brooks. Bertha was always surrounded by loving family members and from which she made a host of fun-loving moments, laughs and memories.

Bertha May Harper attended Bridgeton Public Schools where she was a scholar and a student athlete. Bertha participated in field hockey, tennis and as an influential member of the track and field team. Bertha graduated from Bridgeton High School and went on to train in Our Lady of Lourdes’ Nursing School where she obtained a Standard Certificate as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Bertha had a heart for people as evidenced by her continual devotion to her family, friends and by her career of choice.

During that time, Bertha was swept off her feet by Green Henry Harper at the age of nineteen and their union was established through marriage on December 20, 1952, in Bridgeton, NJ, and lasted for 66 years. Green and Bertha built a home in Fairton, NJ where they raised their three children: Gary Harper, Sr., Vanessa Foreman and Gregory Harper. Bertha was devoted to her children as seen by her constant support of them. She could be seen hauling them and their teammates back and forth to countless sporting practices and games in her tiny Volkswagen, cooking team dinners or by helping out with childcare for their children and grandchildren. Bertha had the opportunity to touch many lives through her many private duty nursing assignments and through the journey that her life took her on.

Bertha was a giver. She was in the habit of giving her time and compassion to those she loved. Bertha was a volunteer to the youth of the Cumberland County 4-H Club by teaching students of all ages how to knit and crochet. Additionally, she was a member of the N.A.A.C.P. where she was known to support her community in the attainment of their civil rights and other just causes.

Bertha May Harper departed from this life on August 22, 2018, surrounded by her family in her home in Fairton, NJ.

She was preceded in death by her parents Herbert Williams and Irene Williams Brooks and by her sister Carolyn Brown. She leaves to mourn her sister Ilene Mason, her children Gary Harper, Sr. (Geneva Harper), Vanessa Foreman and Gregory Harper (Tisha Harper). Bertha will truly be missed by her grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of close friends and relatives.
