Thomas Shelby Vick, 89, of Panama City, FL passed away on June 9, 2018.
He was born September 1, 1928 in Panama City to Anne Shelby & Clarice A. Vick.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 42 years, Suzanne Elaine Ross Vick; three daughters, Elizabeth Ellen, Laura Jane and Lisa Carol.
He is survived by his two daughters, Diane Prather, Cheryl Good, two granddaughters, Lauren Mahr (Lee); Brittany Tucker (James) and two great granddaughters, Brelyn Shelby and Telsa Marie.
Shelby Vick graduated from Bay County High School in 1947. His vocations during his life-time were wide-ranging. As a young man, he was the produce manager for the local A&P Food Store and then became the first librarian at Panama City's Public Library. He also ran his own printing company, where he wrote and published Lynn Haven's first newspaper. Shelby went on to work as an agent for MetLife Insurance, retiring after 28 years. He would retire a second time after spending 13 years working for the Bay County Property Appraiser's Office.
Shelby was an avid fan of science fiction and action/adventure books and movies, being greatly influenced by the "pulp" magazines of his youth. He had four "action" paperbacks and countless "Sci-fi" and adventure short stories published. He was also editor/publisher of several genre' fan magazines (fanzines), including one online: "Planetary Stories", which he produced from 2005 until his health began to fail late last year.
Over the years, Shelby also helped organize several national "Sci-Fi" conferences, including ones in New York, Chicago and New Orleans, as well as three smaller ones here in Panama City.
His wishes were to be cremated and plans for a memorial service will be announced by the family when finalized.
