Kathleen Barbara McGowan was the fourth child born to Margaret Jane (Mockler) and Patrick H. McGowan. Kathleen was born on July 13, 1891 in Rockwood, Manitoba, Canada, a suburb of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Kathleen was born five years after the family relocated to Manitoba from New Brunswick.

Kathleen’s father, Patrick McGowan, died unexpectedly and tragically in a carriage accident in downtown Winnipeg in 1894. A first-hand account of the story of his unfortunate demise from the Winnipeg newspaper can be found on his memorial page. Kathleen probably had no recollection of her father, including his name, as evidenced by the different names she used for him in various documents. After her father’s tragic death her mother was solely responsible for raising their three girls and one son.

According to the 1910 U.S. Census for Bellingham, Washington, Kathleen and her mother, Margaret Jane McGowan, were living together with a boarder at Bellingham in 1910. Kathleen then married Franklin Egan Adair, the son of Irvine James Adair, a Bellingham banking executive, at St. James Cathedral in Seattle on January 3, 1911. Kathleen was working as a teacher in Seattle while Franklin worked at the Bellingham bank for his father Irvine James Adair. Kathleen quit her job as a teacher after her marriage.

Franklin and Kathleen then had a son together, Irvine James Adair, born March 30, 1914. Franklin was killed in a tragic automobile accident in Burlington, Skagit County, Washington on July 27, 1919. Neither Kathleen nor Margaret are found living in Bellingham in the 1920 US Census. It must have been at this time that they relocated to Vancouver, B.C. In their native country Canada. Her mother lived the rest of her life in the Vancouver area and Kathleen lived for more than 60 years residing in the Vancouver area (New Westminster).

Kathleen's son, Irvine James, was born in Bellingham, Washington on March 30, 1914. After his father’s death he apparently began living with his Adair grandparents (Irvine James Adair and his wife Annie) in Bellingham. He is found residing with them at the age of 16 in the 1930 U.S. Census for Bellingham. Kathleen was living in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada by that time. She married John “Jack” Hanna Nicholls Morgan there in September 1931. I suppose the reason for this was the Adair grandparents were well-established and in the best financial position to raise their grandson...and Kathleen relented to this arrangement after considering what was best for her son. There was also her mother’s immigration status that could have been an issue (Kathleen should have been eligible for U.S. citizenship although there is no evidence she ever became a U.S. citizen). Further, Kathleen must have felt responsible for her elderly mother’s welfare at this time as her sisters were not around or able to support and provide for their mother’s needs. Of course this is speculation but it probably comes close to the true situation at that time.

On May 11, 1936, Kathleen’s mother, Margaret Jane (Mockler) McGowan passed while living with Jack and Kathleen Morgan at 131 3rd Street in New Westminster. She was 81 years old. Gertrude Stoddard came to New Westminster with her two sons, Jack and Billy, from Hoquiam, Washington for the funeral. There is a photo of Jack and Billy with Kathleen’s son Irvine James Adair together at this time uploaded to the William Redmond Stoddard memorial #36371702.

As little is known about how Kathleen spent her years with Jack Morgan and after her husband’s passing (her nephew Jack Stoddard never discussed it in depth with the Stoddard family), it will be informative to instead make a mention of information that has been gleamed of her only child, Irvine James Adair.

On April 12, 1939, Irvine James Adair, age 25, occupation "Assayer," married Mary Charlotte Campbell, a 24-year old living in Wells, B.C. but born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. They honeymooned in Hawaii: They are found to have departed from Vancouver, B. for Honolulu, HI on April 12, 1939 and departed from Honolulu, HI for Vancouver, B.C. on April 26, 1939 - arriving back in Vancouver, B.C. on May 5, 1939.

Work must have required Irvine James to go back to the USA. On November 19, 1941, Irvine James Adair registered for the U.S. WWII draft at Winnemucca, Humbolt County, Nevada. He was working for West Coast Mines, Inc.. He gave his birthdate as March 30, 1914. His wife’s name was given as Mrs. Mary Charlotte Adair living at Wells, British Columbia, Canada. This draft registration was later cancelled as Irvine James Adair was apparently a Canadian citizen by then.

It appears Irvine James Adair, who goes by the name, “Jim,” divorced from Mary Charlotte early in their marriage. Jim and Mary Charlotte had children together who apparently now reside in Ontario, Canada. Jim at some point remarried to Grace Golinsky. Grace Adair passed in 2014. Jim celebrated his 105th birthday in White Rock, B.C., Canada on March 30, 2019.

Kathleen lived alone for the remaining years of her life in New Westminster. She moved a short distance from the home she occupied with Jack Morgan at 131 3rd Street to 40 Royal Ave prior to 1969 - as 40 Royal Ave was her address when her sister Marion Agnes came to stay with her during the last three months of her life. Marion Agnes, or “Aunt Agnes,” passed at Jack and Kathleen Morgan’s house on March 9, 1969. Her remains were cremated.

At some point in the early 1980s, Kathleen lived in a high rise apartment building (perhaps it was a senior housing complex) in New Westminster. This was her residence the last time her nephew Jack Stoddard and his wife Barbara had the opportunity to visit Kathleen. Jack Stoddard passed on January 4, 1985. He stayed close to his Aunt Kathleen throughout his life.

As previously mentioned, Kathleen married John “Jack” Hanna Nicholls Morgan (Dec. 10, 1885 - Jan 8, 1971), a “restaurant proprietor,” on September 26, 1931. For the last twenty years of his life Jack was an active member of the Masonic Grand Lodge AF&AM in Vancouver and served as its Grand Secretary up until the day of his death. Jack died on January 8, 1971 in New Westminster, Canada. His remains were cremated.

Kathleen passed on April 29, 1989 at Amherst Private Hospital in Vancouver, B.C., Canada at the age of 97. Irvine James Adair signed his mother's death certificate as the informant on April 30, 1989. Her remains were cremated on May 2, 1989.
