Royalty Figure. She was the lover and later the morganatic wife of the king of Italy Vittorio Emanuel II of Savoia, who granted her the minor noble titles of Contessa di Mirafiori and of Fontanafredda following the death of his wife, Queen Maria Adelaide, in 1855. Their affair caused a great scandal in 1849 when Vittorio was crowned King of Sardinia. Originally interred in a mausoleum created for her by sons in Turin, in 1972 her remains were moved to the Cimitero Monumentale di Torino as a result of vandals breaking in the mausoleum and desecrating the bodies of her and members of her family.
