David Mackey passed away on August 18, 2018 at the age of 61. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, co-workers and students. David was born in Chicago, Illinois. As a young boy he lived in Memphis, Tennessee and then moved to San Antonio, Texas. He graduated from Winston Churchill High School in 1975 and completed his Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry in 1979 through the University of Texas at Austin.

He worked as a Chemist Toxicologist II for the Texas Department of Public Safety through 1984. He then owned and operated three hotel gift shops in Austin, Texas through 1999. He obtained his Texas Teacher’s Certification in Composite Science in 2000 and began work as an AP Chemistry teacher at Samuel Clemens High School in Schertz, Texas until his retirement in 2018. The school recently celebrated his memory by wearing Hawaiian shirts. He had quite a collection of these and wore them often. He would be thrilled!

Beyond his professional life, he loved cooking for family and friends and entertaining in his home. He enjoyed golfing and spending time near the ocean and the lake. His greatest devotion was to his wife, whom he married in 2010. He is survived by his wife Susan and her two children, Ben and Amanda. He is also survived by all seven siblings: Mary, Tim, Claudia, Jane, Katherine, Jonathan and Thomas, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his two beloved parents, Ray Walton Mackey and Helen Bernice Breidenbach.

Friends are invited to a memorial on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 from 6:30 – 7:30 pm at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home at 189 N. Seguin Ave. in New Braunfels, Texas. A reception will be held at McAdoo’s Seafood Company immediately following the service until 9:00 pm. McAdoo’s is located at 196 N. Castell Ave., directly behind the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that anyone wishing to send a memorial make a donation to The David Mackey Scholarship Fund at Samuel Clemens High School.
