JESSIE WATKINS
Miss Jessie Watkins, 95, passed away on Thursday evening, Aug. 23, 2018 in the same home on Grinnell Street in which she was born.
She was born in Key West on March 5, 1923. Miss Jessie excelled in
school and graduated from Key West High in 1940 as valedictorian, retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 49 years in 1992 by accomplishing all jobs that were placed in her path and even had two of her own offices.
First “The Flagler Station,” and then “Boca Chica.” Most everyone who was around her knew of her sharp sense of humor and her compassion
for everyone.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Kathleen Jaycocks Watkins, and father, Thomas Curtis Watkins, two sisters, Kathleen and Bonnie
(Albury), and nephew Richard C. Albury. Surviving is her “partner for life” of 58 years, Oliverio O. (Chippy) Fernandez, and two grandnieces,
Rene Bowers (Jeff) of California and Rhonda Duke (Will) of Texas, along with their mother, Mrs. Lu Albury.
She also left an extended family including members of “The Longtime Locals Breakfast Group” and “Kennedy Café.” Especially close to her were L.T. and Shirley Perpall, Cilia Vidal, Lenny and Kathy Salazar and Carrie and Doug Helliesen; however, I’m sure that anyone’s path that crossed hers was a friend. Miss Jessie never knew a stranger. As she wished, she will be cremated and there will be no services.
