A product of Charleston County Public Schools, she was a graduate of Butler High School in Hartsville, SC. She later earned a degree in Physical Education from Claflin College and taught at Carolina Elementary School in Hartsville. A gifted seamstress, she was later employed at Burnette's Cleaners making alterations.
Surviving are her daughter Bernetta Cooper ; three children: Ashley (Karl) Callier, Shaina Spouts, and Bradford (Shilisa) Cooper ; seven great-grandchildren; her baby sister, Flora B. (Andrew) Dixon); and other relatives.

Interment: Greenlawn Memorial Park.
