He was born in Atlanta, GA in 1947 to Carl and Sue Tanksley in Chatsworth, GA. He loved his family, his country, hunting with his dogs, sport shooting, and getting the family together. COL Tanksley always encouraged us to study history throughout the world. He was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant and served his nation for 26 years. He worked on Air Land Battle Task Force in the early 1980's, was selected for the US Army School of Advanced Military Studies, commanded a battalion at Ft. Hood, attended the US Army War College, served on the DOD Joint Staff, and developed the notion of information warfare and formed the US Army's Land Information Warfare Agency. His vision in the still lives today and has grown to US Army Cyber Command. Later in his retirement, he became a small group mentor for the Army's Advanced Analysis learning program. He also was a resident military historian who helped people enjoy history and thoughts of warriors gone but not forgotten.
COL Tanksley is survived by his wife of 52 years, son, grandsons, great grandchildren, siblings, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Dawn Elizabeth.
