John France was an early settler to Picton having first done work at The Grove in Anakiwa before taking injury and then taking up easier work such as gardening. He was a member of the local council and was involved with the local Catholic Church. He had six girls and six sons with Mary Fox of Dublin, Ireland between 1864 and 1883. He passed away after a five month battle with Stomach Cancer. He was aged 66. He was buried with his eldest son William and was later accompanied in the grave by his children Daniel and Priscilla as well as his wife Mary. His headstone also commemorates his son George who was killed up north.
