Bert was originally from Aiken, SC. He married Susie, from Orangeburg, SC in 1951 just before joining the US Navy. Soon thereafter they moved to San Diego where Bert began his first Navy assignment. Susie began her nursing career in the Naval hospital there in San Diego. After a shortened stint in the Navy they moved back to Aiken where Bert resumed his role at the family dairy farm.
The family, now including four children, subsequently moved to Jacksonville, FL in 1961 where Bert continued his career in the dairy industry and Susie began her career at Baptist Hospital.
After raising family, Bert & Susie were able to retire and enjoyed traveling the country with their camper in tow, eventually settling seasonally in Fort Myers Beach, FL and Saluda, NC.
When health issues eventually made travelling difficult, they came back to Jacksonville settling in the Julington Creek community where they became members of the Fruit Cove Baptist Church.
Along the way, they made tons of friends and created many memories together which they were always eager to share with others. Bert had the gift of singing, which he shared by leading church music in various venues from his teenage years up until he could no longer stand. Susie had a gift of making you feel special and loved, no matter who you were, which she shared through her career as a hospital nurse and cooking up awesome meals and desserts for friends and family at home.
Bert and Susie are survived by their four children: Patsy Roberts of St Johns, FL; Alan and Laury of Raleigh, NC; David and Barbara of St Johns; and Frank & Annette also of St John’s; grandchildren Lisa, Ami, Jason, big Drew, little Drew, Tyler, and Brittany, and 6 great-grandchildren.
Bert & Susie’s remains will be interred at the family burial plot at Millbrook Baptist Church in Aiken, SC.
