James E. Hegdal, 80, passed away Feb. 26, 2007, at Knopp Nursing Home in Fredericksburg. He was born in Oil Hill, Kan. on Nov. 12, 1926, to Martin and Blanche Hegdal. He spent most of his boyhood in Borger and attended Frank Phillips College in Stinnet.

Jim is survived by his wife, Joan of Fredericksburg; one daughter, Jan Spikes and husband Dr. Sam Spikes of Lubbock; a son, Steven Hegdal and wife Pat; and two more sons, Martin D. Hegdal of Lubbock and James Hegdal of Tacoma, Wash. He also was the proud grandfather of Rick Dunlap of Houston, Jessica Hegdal of Lubbock, Sabrina Bual of Boise, Idaho, and Jimmy Don Tye. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren and two brothers, Hayden Hegdal of Lubbock and Robert Hegdal and spouse Shirley of San Angelo. Jim was also fortunate to have numerous nieces and nephews, for whom he had great affection.

Jim was preceded in death by his daughter, Jacquelyn Tye; a sister, Natalie Hegdal; a twin brother, Jackie Hegdal; and two more brothers, Martin (Babe) and Joseph Dudley Hegdal.

Jim married Ruth Nabors Gage in Lubbock, while he was stationed at Reese AFB in Lubbock. She passed away in 1987. Together, they raised their five children in Bovingdon, England; Peru, Ind.; Wichita Falls; Reno, Nev.; and Lubbock.

Jim spent most of his life in the service of his country. He enlisted in the Navy during WWII and received a presidential citation for his bravery. He was discharged from the Navy in 1946 and spent a brief period of time as a civilian. He soon enlisted in the US Air Force, where he served an additional 28 years, retiring as Chief Master Sergeant (E-9) in 1978. Following his retirement from active duty, he worked as a civilian purchasing agent for the US Coast Guard.

During his career in the Air Force, James Hegdal served at many duty stations in the US and abroad, including two tours in Vietnam. There, he received numerous medals and commendations for bravery and service. Jim, himself, was proudest that during his job as crew chief, not a single airman lost his life due to helicopter of aircraft maintenance failure or error.

James Hegdal was Past Master of Portland Lodge 1411, a member of Medina Lodge 1319, AF & AM, Worthy Patron of Portland Chapter 1108, Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of Al Amin Shriners in Corpus Christi. He especially enjoyed barbequing briskets for their annual fundraisers.

Jim's greatest joys were his family and his numerous friends. We will always miss his wonderful sense of humor, his warmth, and his amazing intellect. He was one of the finest of the "greatest generation."

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Resthaven's Abbey Chapel. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5 until 8 p.m. Thursday, March 1, 2007. Memorials may be made to Hill Country SPCA, Fredericksburg, TX, or the charity of your choice.
