Little Rock-Edgar Burks Chestnutt, 45, advertising manager of the Arkansas Power & Light Company, died at his home here last night of a heart attack. Chestnutt had been suffering from a heart ailment for several months, and had been confined to his home for the past several days.
He joined the utility company in 1938 after serving as editor of the old Pine Bluff Ark. Graphic; state editor of the Montgomery, Ala. Advertiser, and editor of the Arkansas Gazette’s Sunday magazine section. Appointed advertising manager of AP&L in 1942, and stationed in Pine Bluff, he was transferred to Little Rock in 1948.
Chesnutt broke into newspaper work as a cub reporter while attending high school in Pine Bluff. After he left the newspaper business, he continued to tip newspapers and news services on stories. He was the first “reporter” on the scene of the Pine Bluff tornado in 1947. While at Pine Bluff, Chesnutt was active in civic affairs.
He was at one time an officer of the Arkansas Tuberculosis association, the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, and the Jefferson County Boy Scouts.
He was active in Masonry and was a member of the Episcopal Church.
Survivors include his widow, the former Frances A. Marshall of Pine Bluff, and two sons, Edgar F. Chesnutt, news editor of Radio Station KARK in Little Rock, and Chambless Chesnutt; and a brother, Jack Chesnutt of Pine Bluff.
