Barbara was born in Fremont on Monday, 6 May 1935 to Ambrose B. and Henrietta C. (Partee) Gabel. She was a 1953 graduate of St. Joseph High School.
Barbara married Richard J. Schmidt on June 25, 1955 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church; he preceded her in death on Wednesday, 4 September 2002.
Barbara was a homemaker who worked in the Sacred Heart School cafeteria for forty-five years. Barbara enjoyed baking, gardening and being outdoors. She was an avid Cleveland and Notre Dame sports fan.
As a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Altar Rosary Society, Barbara volunteered at many different church events and was active throughout her life. She also served as a Camp Fire Leader.
Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Richard J. Schmidt, Sr.; her parents and her son-in-law, Kevin West.
She is survived by her ten children, Gregory (Cheryl) Schmidt, of Oak Harbor, Ohio; Therese (Tracy) Colston, of Port Clinton, Ohio; Juliana (Gregory) Dorr, of Smithville, Missouri; Geoffrey Schmidt and Matthew Schmidt, both of Fremont; Christina (Perry) Eads, of Concord, North Carolina; Deanna (Fred) Perez, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Michele (Jay) Leonard, of Toledo, Ohio; Richard (Venice) Schmidt, II, of Norwalk, Ohio; and Elizabeth (Read) Schalmo, of Riga, Michigan. Also surviving Barbara are her sisters, SR Mary Bryan Gabel, of Waterville, Ohio and Mary Jane Schroeder, of Olmstead Falls, Ohio; along with twenty-two grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held from 2 to 4 P.M. and again from 6 to 8 P.M., on Friday, 3 August 2018, followed by a rosary service at 7:30 P.M., at the Wonderly Horvath Hanes Funeral Home, 425 East State Street, Fremont. A third visitation was held from 9 to 9:45 A.M., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 A.M., on Saturday, 4 August, in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 550 Smith Road, Fremont, followed by burial alongside Band's husband, in the St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, located just off Cleveland Road in Fremont.
