John F. Boner, 99, of Mansfield passed away Monday morning, August 20, 2018 at home following an extended illness.

John was born October 29, 1918 in Fredericktown the son of Bun and Martha (Sherrow) Boner. He attended Butler High School and after participated in the Civilians Conservation Corps in Montana (a public work relief program that provided work to young men on the tail end of the Great Depression).

Soon enlisting in the Army, during WWII John was stationed all over Africa and Europe with the 142nd Infantry, 36 Division Texas T-Patchers, and was the first foot soldier from Richland County to have boots on the ground in Europe. Following three and a half years of service John was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, Presidential Citation with Cluster, and seven battle stars. Back home, Alleen ”June” Tolliver, had sent her love and support of him through correspondence, the two sharing letters back and forth for two years. Upon John’s discharge from the military, John and June were married November 3, 1945 and would have celebrated 70 years of marriage before her passing in 2015.

He worked 35 years at Tappan retiring in the early 80’s. During retirement, he loved golfing almost daily at Valley View golf course, and had great interest in steam threshers. He took his steam engine to various shows and was a founding member of the Richland County Steam Thresher’s Association. In more recent times, John enjoyed reading books and watching movies about WWII.

Strong and stubborn to the very end, John was a life member of the Mansfield VFW Post #3494, and the American Legion Post #535, Bellville.

He is survived by daughters Patty J. (Roger) Sqrow of Mansfield, Ruth E. Bonner of Galion, Laura E. Boner of Mansfield, and adopted daughter Cheryl LeMaster of Mansfield; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family.

Along with his parents he was preceded in death by a son Melvin J. Boner; and four siblings.

The family will receive friends Thursday, August 23, 2018 from 6-8 p.m. in the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Friday at 11 am with visiting the hour prior. Chaplain Dallas Waggle will officiate and burial with military honors by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail will follow in Bellville Cemetery.
