Roy "Smiley" Joseph Hodges, Sr.
July 27, 1928 - August 19, 2018

Roy “Smiley” Joseph Hodges, Sr., 90, of Seymour passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2018. He retired from the North Fork and Southern Railway System. Roy served the community as Constable in Seymour and was affectionately known as, “Officer Smiley”, especially when he had directed traffic for Seymour Schools and First Baptist Church, Seymour. Officer Smiley was an active member of the Masonic Lodge and First Baptist Church, Seymour for many years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal J. Hodges; parents, Charles and Cleo Hodges; sisters, Jessie Metcalf and Mary Sims; and daughters, Judy Cruze and Betty Jo Dunn.

Smiley is survived by his children, Kathy Johnson, Roy Hodges, Jr. and wife, Nancy, and Pam Helton and husband, Kenny; son-in-law, Larry Cruze; grandchildren, Justin (Meredith) Johnson, Roy (Barbara) Hodges III, Charlie (Whitney) Hodges, Chris (Jill) Hodges, Amanda Cruze, Jessica Dunn, and Ashley Dunn; sister, Charlsie “Pete” Ann Spears; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of extended loving family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the East Tennessee Alzheimer’s Foundation, Alzheimer’s Tennessee, 5801 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919.

The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to Smoky Mountain Hospice, all the staff members, and the residents and their families, of Dominion Senior Living, for all their support, care, and generous kindness. There truly are not enough words to describe the feeling of family that these compassionate souls have bestowed upon us.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Wednesday, August 22nd with the funeral service to follow 7 PM at Atchley’s Seymour Chapel, 122 Peacock Court, Seymour, TN 37865. Pastor Bruce Yates will be officiating. The graveside service will be held 10 AM Thursday in Boyd’s Creek Cemetery with Pastor Bob Shultz officiating.
